    Is your ideal vacation waking up to the sound of roosters crowing and plucking meals out of the garden?

    Many resorts have planted a garden, and some maybe even flourished it into a farm. But what’s even better is when a full-on working farm—growing fruits and vegetables—lets you stay overnight. From a peach farm in Arizona to a mushroom farm in Wisconsin, here’s where to book your next vacay. Consider this your warning, however: You may be asked to help with farm chores. Although your edible reward is whatever you can fit into your palms, paired with fresh air, lots of social-distancing space, and a mental break from the metropolis.

    WHERE: New Carlisle, Indiana

    Canvas glamping tents at Rainfield Farm’s 13-acres of fruits, vegetables, herbs—convenient to the country’s newest national park (Indiana Dunes National Park), wineries, and fruit orchards just over the Michigan state line—each boast a wood-burning stove, private bath, shower, and outdoor fire pit. No need to pitch a tent: just fall asleep on the plush mattress. A tea kettle and supply of tea are also available. Tack on breakfast or dinner culled from what’s grown on or harvested from the farm, which was established in 2012.

    WHERE: Queen Creek, Arizona

    Only 43 miles from downtown Phoenix lies Schnepf Farms, a family-owned (since the 1960s) organic peach farm where you pick peaches (as well as other fruits and vegetables), take yoga classes, and have the opportunity to fall asleep in 10 restored vintage trailers dating back to between the 1940s and 1970s. Options include a 1969 Airstream, 1948 Spartan Manor, and 1955 Pullman Train, paired with darling pin-striped awnings out front. (Don’t worry: they’re outfitted with flat-screen TVs, a Keurig coffee maker and, um, an 8-track player so you can properly groove.) No need to pack a breakfast: Bakery items are sold daily in the country store.

    WHERE: Spring Green, Wisconsin

    Down the road from Frank Lloyd Wright’s former homestead and the American Players Theatre, and an easy hour’s drive from downtown Madison is The Birdhouse Inn, a quaint, six-room stay. Owners Martorano and Ana Maria Vascan, who met at a book club, debuted the inn on their 55-acre mushroom farm (Hazel Hill Farm) this year. Rates include a farm-to-table breakfast (with either French Press coffee or loose-leaf tea)—you can collect your own eggs if you like—and unlimited opportunities to cozy up in front of the two huge stone fireplaces or hike the wooded property.

    WHERE: Monroe, Maine

    Founded in 2012,  and owned by a young couple with limited prior farming experience–but an extreme passion for the land–Toddy Pond Farm, a 500-acre diversified dairy farm 30 miles south of Bangor, is adorably branded. During peak season a  minimum seven-night  stay is required in the renovated 1940s-era “summer cottage,” and don’t be surprised if you hear cows and sheep grazing out on pasture as an alarm clock. Cave-aged cheese, yogurts and ice cream sandwiches crafted in the on-site creamery are always within reach via the farm’s store, and the owners invite you to watch anything and everything, from milking cows to loons on the pond, to feeding piglets.

    WHERE: Paso Robles, California

    In French, this farmstead creamery’s name, Rêves de Moutons, means “sheep dreams,” which is quite appropriate considering you can now get your zzz s surrounded by sheep thanks to overnight accommodations. It’s also the owners’ lifestyle dream, partially cooked up on their Paris honeymoon. (The farm also raises goats.) Each of the three retrofitted campers (referred to as “Joy,” “Bliss,” and Harmony” to set the right tone) features a full kitchen (to chill amazing Central Coast wines?) and Queen-size mattresses, plus access to a shared courtyard with lots of seating and your own private bistro table-set. Daily farm tours let you dive deeper into the farm’s history and day-to-day life.

    WHERE: Timberville, Virginia

    Showalter’s Orchard & Greenhouse, home to the Shenandoah Valley cider maker and apple and peach orchards, is very welcoming, right on down to the food trucks parked here each week. Only a few steps from the orchard is a cute cottage (inside the former cider house) with crisp-white furnishings, subway tile, and wall paint, with a loft concept and vintage, repurposed decor. As the owners suggest, once you check-in, sip cider around the fire pit on the brick patio and soak up the view.

    WHERE: Germantown, Hudson Valley, New York

    Hearty Roots Farm, an 1820s three-bedroom farmhouse (bookable through Airbnb) on the historic Wilson farmstead—a Community Supported Agriculture organic-vegetable farm—is only two hours north of Manhattan. Here, you’ll be treated to 70 acres of farm life hosted by owners Lindsey and Ben Shute, with opportunities to pick your own dinner (and flower bouquets) while petting resident farm animals. Fresh vegetables are stocked in the fridge, and eggs and pork are sold in the farm store, perfect if you plan to tinker in the farmhouse’s kitchen.

    Don’t be fooled by Beltane Ranch‘s 105-acre Sonoma Valley wine portfolio: the family also harvests–using sustainable methods–vegetables, fruits, olives (to make olive oil), and fresh eggs. The five-room house (book the entire house or just one room) dates back to 1892 and is architecturally luxe, with soaking and clawfoot tubs, iron bed frames, graphic wallpaper, and French doors that open up to lemon and lime trees. Inn guests have access to picnics, cheese and charcuterie boards, and dinners only open to the wine club.
