TRAVEL TIPS

Air Travel

Air Berlin and United fly direct from the United States to Berlin. Flying time to Berlin is just over 7½ hours from New York, 8½ from Chicago, and 9½ from Miami. There are many options for non-direct flights stopping first at a major European hub such as Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, or London.

Western Berlin's Tegel Airport (TXL) will continue to be used until eastern Berlin's Schönefeld Airport, about 24 km (15 miles) outside the center, has been expanded into BBI "Berlin Brandenburg International." Also known as "Willy Brandt," this international airport of the capital region is expected to open in late 2017. Until then, Schönefeld is mostly used by charter and low-budget airlines. The two working Berlin airports share a central phone number.

Getting into the City

To get into Berlin from Tegel Airport, you can take the X9, 128, or 109 buses that connect to various points and subway stations. A taxi to central Berlin will cost about €25. From Schönefeld, the Airport Express and the slower S-bahn trains travel to the city center. Bus 171 connects to the subway line U7 at the Rudow station. All three options require an ABC zone ticket. A taxi ride from Schönefeld Airport takes about 40 minutes and will cost around €40.
